Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) President Devender Yadav said that due to the insensitivity and inaction of BJP’s Rekha Gupta Government towards the consequences of rising water levels in the Yamuna, Delhi is once again on the brink of flooding as it had happened in July 2023 during the AAP Government when key roads in the Capital flooded as water from the Yamuna river overflowed onto them.
Devender Yadav said that the Yamuna water level has been rising and flowing above the danger mark of 205.33 on August 31, as the water level has been rising due to continuous heavy rain for the past several days, but like in all other matters concerning the city, the Rekha Gupta Government has been inactive in taking quick preventive action, as the Government has not made adequate arrangements for flood relief to the people living near the river banks.
Devender Yadav criticizes BJP-Haryana for releasing massive water flow without coordination
Devender Yadav said that the BJP Government of Haryana has shown total disregard to the Capital’s safety by releasing lakhs of cusecs of water from the Hathni Kund barrage to threaten havoc in Delhi after an alert was issued in Yamuna Nagar, Karnal and Sonipat in Haryana and on August 31 after all the gates of the Hathni Kund were opened and 1.65 lakh cusecs of water was released at 2 pm, 1.65 lakh cusecs at 4 am, 1.95 cusecs at 6 am and 2.72 lakh cusecs at 7 am. He said that after the arrival of lakhs of cusecs of water released by Haryana in Delhi for the past 24 hours, the spectre of Delhi going under water has risen. He said that it was shocking that the Rekha Gupta Government has not made any arrangement to deal with a critical situation that may arise when the full impact of the water released by Haryana is felt in the Capital.
Warns of severe flood risk in Delhi due to government’s
Devender Yadav said that before releasing water from Hathni Kund, the Haryana Government should have taken the Delhi Government into confidence and alerted it while the Rekha Gupta government did not bother to talk to the Haryana government either about its move to release lakhs of cusecs of water to the Yamuna Delhi, and the ravage such a decision would create in Delhi. He said that if there is heavy rain in the coming couple of days, as forecast by the Meteorological Department, and the water released from Hathni Kund Barrage arrives in Delhi in the next 72 hours, then it would be impossible to prevent water from the overflowing Yamuna getting the Delhi streets under water. Devender Yadav said that in view of the flood threat, the Rekha Gupta government should take prompt steps to move out those living in the low lying areas of the river banks to safer places as the Kejriwal Government had left the poor people to their own fate without providing them any relief when the Yamuna overflowed when he was in power.
